There
is a tree out there
in the field
among the winter shadows
the tree trunk is bathed
in the soft glow
of the setting sun
if you follow
the trunk
on up the tree
you can see a hawk's nest
perched there
like an old growth upon the tree
and if you keep following
the limbs up to where they get
thin and skinny
and squint into the sun
you can see the hawk
watching the
field
for movement
fierce eyes
hooked beak
fluffed head
of feathered splendor
an observance worth making
a picture worth taking
hawk and tree and setting sun
and the beauty of
that solitary moment
is enough
to make you kneel
and say a prayer.
