Even the sunflowers
cannot bear this oppressive heat their leaves fade to brown turning crisp
and crinkly their stalks yellowed brittle to the touch
they hang
their heads like sad sinners sorry for the sin of losing life of
giving up
starved for water they lean like weary soldiers holding
up their comrades in somber retreat
the heat wears down resolve drains
all strength and leaves hope weary in the stifling stillness
wait
then heads bowed like sunflowers wait for late September when finally
the air will hold a hint of cooness a promise of rain
wait like
these patiently in place for an end to this everlasting drought.
