Wedemeyer Home/Academy
Restoration
The old Wedemeyer
home in Belton has
received some very needed preservation/renovation. On both the state
and national lists of historic homes, it was built sometime before
1881 (part of the home is shown on Augustus Koch’s 1881 Bird’s Eye
View of Belton) it
was added onto in 1891 by local builder T. Hamp Birdwell.
The site served as Wedemeyer Academy from 1886 until 1911. Professor
Charles Wedemeyer, a Baylor graduate, taught school here and among
his graduates were General Walton Walker (who fought in WWI,
WWII, and died
during the Korean War), Attorney Mallory Blair (of Nuremburg trial
fame) and State Treasurer Sam Sparks.
The Academy was moved to Temple
in 1912.
