PAUSING BY REELFOOT LAKE

The egret stands on one spindly leg,
an Ichabod Crane of Nature,
Hardly aware of our presence,
it balances its slender body
on a wooden railing weathered
by seasons of sun and storm.
The lake is calm; gentle waves
lap against the knees
of the ancient cypress grove
and I am transported.
