"In the
1920’s there was a school built for the Mexican or Hispanic children
in Kenedy.
This is a picture of my mom’s class in and around 1935 to 1937.
My mother, Evelina Salinas, would have been anywhere from 10 - 12
yrs of age. Soon after that mom, like many in the area at that time,
was kept out of school due to TB. It was prominent back then.
I show this photo to my nieces and nephews and it just amazes them
that there was segregation. We’ve come a long way, in some ways.
In others, we’re still learning. " - Maria Grijalva, December

"The Kenedy
Independent School District was organized in 1894 with sixty-eight
pupils. In 1908 a three-story school building was erected. In 1920
a $65,000 high school was built. A Mexican school was built in
1929 and had five teachers; a school for black children was built
in 1931. A new high school was built in 1958, a junior high school
in 1968, and an elementary school in 1984." - From:
