Help
from Gregg County?
The Northcutt Heights Elementary School
"In Longview,
Texas
there was a school just off of highway 80. It is a small red brick
building built about 1930. It sits on the highest hill on Gregg
County. My brother, three sisters and I all went to school there
in the early 1940s. I started school there in 1944. The name was
Northcutt Heights Elementary.
I think the building is still standing. Could someone in Gregg County
or Longview confirm that it is?
I have been trying to see if it is eligible to be placed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
A lot of people wouldn't recognize its importance to Longview's
cultural history. If it's still there, perhaps something can be
done toward preservation.
I have included two photos - one of my 1st grade class and one of
my teacher (Miss Nellie Black Cade)." - Jesse Suttles, May 2012

I am looking at your website, TexasEscapes.com at this moment. I
am not sure if I have emailed you before but your question was is
the building of Northcutt Heights Elementary School still standing.
Yes, it is. The 2nd picture on your website year 1945-1946 is a
picture with me and my brother as well as a cousin in the class.
I posted this picture on the TXGenWeb site.
The building was there when I and my husband were in Texas October
of this year. I believe it is still used as an Administration building
for the Longview School District or it was a few years ago. The
last time we drove to the top it was in excellent condition. We
drove on Hwy 80 past it this year and I could see it still standing
still the beautiful red brick. - Shirley Smith Manning, October
