History in a Pecan Shell

Partners W. A. Harding and Lamar Gill were the developers who laid out Hargill, cobbling together letters from their last names. There was no 19th century history for the community and it wasn't granted a post office until 1924. Two years later the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railroad opened a depot here and the 1930 census showed a population of 400 for 1930. The town had ten stores at this time as well as three churches and a school. It seems to have weathered the Great Depression and WWII quite well since 9 stores were still operating in 1947. But the town was not imune to the post war mobility and by the early 1960s, the number of residents had dropped to just 100. By 1990 the town had grown to 1,349 residents and that figure was used for the 2000 census as well.
