LUXELLO, TEXAS
HISTORY
"Luxello was
on Cibolo Creek and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas line, eighteen
miles northeast of downtown San
Antonio in northeastern Bexar
County. The community, known briefly as Landa, was probably
first settled around 1900. A post office opened there in 1915 but
closed a short time later. Luxello was named for Charles Lux, who
served as its first postmaster. In 1915 Luxello had a population of
thirty-five. The community declined during the 1920s, but in the mid-1930s
it still had a store, a station, and several houses. In 1930 and again
in 1940 its population was reported as twenty-five. With the growth
of nearby Selma and Universal
City after World
War II, the community lost its distinctive character, and by the
late 1980s it was no longer shown on maps."

Correction
Town of Landa / Luxello, Texas
"I need to
correct some information concerning the Town of Landa, Town of Luxcello,
and the Gas Station.
Joseph and Helen Landa established the Town of Landa in the middle
1800's with a population of 36 German Settlers who built homes and
buildings for the Town. Their Son Harry and his wife Hannah Landa
established Landa Station railroad stop for the Town of Landa to transport
cotton and local cattle with a contract with the MKT Railroad. William
and Nancy Davenport along with Joseph & Helen Landa and the German
family farms produced cotton. The cotton was processed and baled at
the Cotton Gin established by Vincenti Micheli along with 4 water
wells under his Spanish Land Grant. William Davenport and Nancy acquired
the Cotton Gin, Blacksmith Shop with Stables, Saloon, Eatery or Restaurant.
After William Davenport passed away his wife Nancy sold the land and
buildings to Arthur & Robert Sahm whose family was part of the original
35 German Settlers. Some of the Sahm families are buried in there
own cemetery in Selma on private land.
Harry Landa and His wife re-acquired the land and buildings from the
Sahm Brothers, and then Harry Landa sold everything to Charles Laux
& his wife Hulda Laux and established the Town of Luxcello formerly
known as Town of Landa. The Brothers rebuilt and updated the old Micheli
Cotton Gin to establish a boiler system to assist in the Processing
of cotton. (You have it pictured as a Gas Station.) During the early
days of the middle 1800's the towns of Selma
and Bracken
were establishing themselves across the Cibolo Creek from the Town
of Landa. After these towns flourished 2 more cotton Gins were established
and the population grew. So now you have 3 cotton gins up and running
and loading the rail cars for the MKT railroad. During this time period
the Evens family moved in and assisted in establishing themselves
and Bracken
which was also part of the Micheli Spanish land grant. The population
grew to over 600 families that lived within the communities. Selma
moved from its old location to where it is today, but the difference
is where IH35 cuts through that use to be the main street of the new
Selma." - Mr. Randy Barnes Sr, April 10, 2023 |
