History in a Pecan Shell

Charles and Mahala Edwards set up their store on the Cadiz-Oakville Road (present-day FM 1203). When the application for a post office was submitted, Mrs. Edwards became the honoree. Although the post office was short-lived, the local school (est. 1914) lasted many years longer. In 1945 it merged with the George West ISD. By the mid 1960s, the site was vacant of store and school. The proximity to the county seat stymied growth and there is no evidence that Mahala had anything resembling a "business district."
