History in
a Pecan Shell
The only town in
Texas to be named after a sewer pipe company. (The San Antonio Sewer
Pipe Manufacturing Company, to be exact.) The community dates from
1901 when the company started producing tile from the abundant red
clay. A post office opened that same year but 14 years later, the
population was still a mere 125 residents.
HB Despite the commercial name, the town throve. At it’s peak the
community had a dairy and three grocery stores as well as two general
merchandize stores. The population was 200 in the late 1930s and the
company payroll had 150 employees. Daily production at the plant was
120 tons of pipe.
The population reached 300 by the mid 1960s. It’s proximity to Floresville
curbed growth, but the town remains vibrant with a population of 443
for the 2000 census. |
