Believed to be the oldest Orthodox synagogue to have been in continuous use in Texas, the B'nai Abraham congregation was organized in 1885 with 20 charter members.

After the 1892 building burned, a replacement was constructed the following year. The building is frequently visited and on high holy days services are conducted.

Original Jewish settlers in Washington County included the Levinson and Simon families who arrived in the 1860s.

Organized under the direction of Rabbi Israel, first officers were:

L. Fink , first president,
F. Susnitsky, vice president,
L. Z. Harrison, treasurer, and
J. Lewis and Abe Fink, secretaries
