CUERO
Cuero can be reached going west from Sugarland on Hwy 90 Alt
via
Eagle Lake (don't expect to see the lake or an eagle) and
Hallettsville.
Another route is west on I-10 via Columbus
and Schulenburg
where you'll pick up Hwy 77 and head south passing through
Hallettsville
and Yoakum.
This is our featured route.
COLUMBUS
One of the natural attractions of Columbus is its abundance of Live
Oak trees. The second
largest Live Oak in the state is here (Necker Estate Oak, 1218
Walnut St.) as well as beautiful examples throughout the town (notably
the one in front of the library). The largest Live Oak in the
state is the Goose
Island Oak near Rockport.
Many of the homes have been restored and are available for tours and
the Chamber of Commerce is found in the downstairs corner of the 1886
Opera House. Contact them at 425 Spring. 409-732-5135.
Annual Magnolia Homes Tour is their May event.
SCHULENBURG
The Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce is on the right as you enter the
town at 101 B Kessler Ave (Hwy 77), 409-743-4514. Although closed
on weekends they are thoughtful enough to leave brochures and maps
on their porch for those of us who can't visit during the week.
This is a policy that we would like to see other chambers of commerce
consider.
Schulenburg is famous for being the home of "The
Painted Churches", and maps are available to direct you to
the churches, all of which are within a few miles of town. When
visiting the church at Dubina
continue past the church 1/4 miles on the left to see an interesting
example of one
of Fayette County's unpainted bridges. Other brochures highlight
the downtown historic district and other historic homes and sites
within the town itself.
HALLETTSVILLE
Continuing south on 77 after 18 easy miles you come to Hallettsville.
This is the county seat of Lavaca
(Spanish for the Vaca) County and they've got the Courthouse
to prove it. Be aware that Hwy 77 doesn't run into the square,
which is one block northwest of Hwy 77's intersection with Alt 90.
Their Chamber of Commerce is on the left as you enter town on Hwy
77. 512-798-2662. In addition to their brochures there's
a well-printed pamphlet called Hallettsville Past and Present,
which is only $3.00 and should serve as a model for any Texas
town with a square or plaza. Contained inside is a block by
block description of the square with its history building by building.
Leaving Hallettsville
on 77 Alt and/or Alt 90 you'll have a decision to make when
you see signs for Yoakum
and Shiner.
Consult your map.
SHINER
The Spotzel Brewery is open for tours.
Call for hours. 1-800-5SHINER.
"Cleanest little city in Texas" is truth in advertising.

to Shiner & Moulton
YOAKUM
If you decide to head straight for Cuero
continue on Alt 77 and pass through Yoakum.
This town offers lots of opportunities for photographers with its
brick buildings and somewhat weathered appearance. The Yoakum
Library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Yoakum is on the county line, so as you leave you will already
be in DeWitt County.
