May 2004

Photographer's Note:

"Signal Peak and El Capitan are loosely used as names of the face or bluff of the mountain. This is the part so popular with photographers.

Guadalupe Peak, which is about a mile to the north is higher than El Capitan. Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in Texas. It is less than 8 miles from the New Mexico stateline.

Hiking from Guadalupe Peak to El Capitan is a challenge. I've done it once. No trail, just tall grass. The wind made every rustle sound like a rattlesnake." - Barclay Gibson, August 24, 2005

"... and so it is, with a heavy heart that we bid adeu to majestic El Capitan and his taller sister Guadalupe, sentinels of southwest Texas." - Editor
