The artist of “Taking
the Lead…” is perhaps the only muralist from the Depression-era to
have her own Facebook-page. Born in 1917 and raised in New York’s
Greenwich Village, she has lived in Maine since 1936. Her mother and
father (William and Marguarette (Thompson) Zoarch) met in Paris at
an art school. The husband-to-be recalled later; “I couldn’t understand
how such a nice girl could paint such wild pictures.” Both parents
painted murals and William later switched to sculpture. The Internet
is full of information about the family. |

Discussing
Maine in Yukon, Oklahoma
While visiting the Yukon, Oklahoma post office for the photos, the
editor was photographing the mural when a woman waiting in line spoke
up: “I know the artist who painted that mural!” She then mailed her
package and introduced herself as Judy Chancellor and gave us the
story of her Maine connection with the artist. Although the meeting
was brief, Ms. Chancellor’s exuberance and candor makes us feel we
have a friend in Yukon, Oklahoma. - Editor |
