Adventures in Bridge Excavations

Giving LBJ (My) Finger

by Bob Mohel
Adventures in Bridge Excavations
Foundation driling rig, LBJ Library
Contractor's Foundation Drilling Rig
I was working out of town, and I had just finished up. Before we put the equipment on the road we had to call in to see where we were going next. Some times it was home (Austin) or maybe some other town.

[The supervisor] told me to come home, and stop at the LBJ Library which was then under construction. There were four holes to be drilled, and then I could take off for the weekend. So Friday morning we got after it real hard. On the third hole my helper had trouble getting the 2x2 inch hub out the hard compacted base, so I got off the rig to help him get it out. I reached down to pull the hub out, but it was too late. He was already in motion with a square point shovel, and my middle finger was in the way. So he cut a half inch off-of my middle finger and it’s still there under that library.

The other guys got to go party with girls of ill repute, but me, I went to the hospital. What a bummer.
