The appropriately
named Humble Station was sent in by Mel
Brown, author of Chinese
Heart of Texas, and the son of the station’s owner, who relates:
“My
brother Bob reminded me that our dad had an Humble gas station in
San Antonio briefly
before WW II
as these three views attest. The location was jinxed so it was of
brief duration but picturesque nonetheless. It sat on South New Braunfels
Avenue, directly across the street from the large municipal cemetery
complex which was as bad for business after dark as it was for getting
help after sundown. That particular cemetery still runs for several
blocks along New Braunfels Avenue and is long known for its effects
on the neighboring environs. For many years it was the site of a huge
cylindrical water storage tank that was a real landmark for San
Antonio’s East Side.”
