History in
a Pecan Shell
Near the Salt Fork
of the Red River in northwestern Collingsworth
County. The site was on the Rocking Chair Ranch until the ranch
ceased to exist.
Post office was granted in 1904 with the Dozier school district being
organized five years later when a schoolhouse was built.
The school's location changed several times until a larger building
was constructed in 1913. This school lasted until 1929, when a brick
school was built.
By 1930 the population of Dozier was 60 and it somehow increased during
the Great Depression to 100 by 1940. |

My maiden
name is Lynda Gardner. I am the oldest daughter, and child of Buster
And Eileen (Wilson) Gardner, who were married in Dozier, in 1946,
although I was born later in Hemet,CA.(1947). We returned a short
time later to live on a farm close to Dozier, where the Gardner
family were share croppers.
They raised cotton, and when the big trailer got full of cotton,
(they called the trailer of cotten a bale) Daddy (Buster Gardner)
would pull the trailer to the Gin in Dozier, and if I was lucky
(and had been good) I got to ride to the Gin with him. Kinda catie-corner
across from the gin was a Mercentile Store, that had everything
in the world almost, in it. That's where Daddy would buy me a chocholate
milk that was bottled like a soda pop, then we would ride back to
the cotton patch. What a happy childhood memory.
My family that I remember living there was Dolph, Flora, Ben, Clifford,
Buster and Eileen Gardner, and Vergil, Cleta, VirgilKeath, Laverda
(Babe), and Billy Wigley, and Jim, Myrtle, Eileen, John, Cecil, Francis,
and Ruby Wilson.
My Grandpa passed away there when I was 5 years old, but was buried
in Oklahoma. My cousin Virgil Keath Wigley lived there, and graduated
from high school in Samnorwood. I remember going to school part
of both the 1st and 2nd grade in Samnorwood. One of my teachers
was Ms. Blue. I am also related to some of the Tates in that area,
because my Aunt Fris, Freda (Gardner) Tate, married my Uncle Apple,
Lloyd Cecil Tate.- Lynda Gardner Haislip, December 27, 2006
