History in
a Pecan Shell
Swedish immigrants
living in the Austin area
in 1884 got tired of the abundant rain and ground water in Central
Texas and went West in search of a more challenging environment. They
found it in Fisher County.
J.J. Swenson surveyed the site of the new community which was named
in honor of the Swedish homeland.
A small church/ school was built in 1885 and a post office opened
the following year. In 1889 a separate schoolhouse was constructed.
Swedonia had an estimated population of 125 in 1896 with two separate
churches.
Hard times, isolation and the failure to attract new settlers resulted
in the post office closing in 1907. The school continued, but the
wholesale consolidations after WWII
spelled doom for the struggling town. After its 1946 consolidation,
Swedonia disappeared on state highway maps.
Swedonia Cemetery is shown on the TxDOT County map of Fisher
County. |
