History in
a Pecan Shell
Nothing is left
of the town. Not even a cemetery is shown on the TxDoT county map
for Freestone
County.
Troy, was also known as Pine Bluff. There is currently another
Troy, Texas off Interstate 35 between Temple
and Waco.
The Troy discussed here was on the Trinity River and near what
is presently Fairfield Lake.
The town started around 1847 with a dozen families who thought the
location on the river ideal for a town. A man named Bateman is said
to be the town's founder. Troy was granted a post office in 1850 and
it closed 16 years later.
Troy enjoyed a short period of prosperity when its location as a shipping
point on the river made it the most important town in Freestone
County. The rival port of Magnolia
(Anderson County)
stole the promise of greatness from Troy. Troy was soon dropped from
many maps and by 1936 it was just a memory. |

I came across the comments regarding the old community of Troy,
TX in Freestone County. Michael E. Bonner is my cousin. I’d like
to get in contact with the other person who has posted comments.
My father owns the property where Troy, Pine Bluff and the cemetery
are located. The rails she are referring to were built by my great
uncle from pipe and it is not from the original settlement. It is
for launching john boats into the river off of Pine Bluff. The “rail
car” is four tire rims on a welded frame to hold the boat and I
don’t know anyone brave enough to ride down that launch, therefore
the adjacent metal stairway. The actually town location is in a
clearing back from Pine Bluff and the cemetery access is unmarked
thru a heavily wooded area. I’d be very interested to know where
she obtained her information. Thanks. - Barbara Bonner, January

I saw your
listing about Troy, Freestone County, Texas. Fairfield Lodge No.
103 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons traces its roots to a masonic
lodge at Troy. As you may already know, Fairfield is the county
seat of Freestone County. - Michael E. Bonner, August 20, 2004
I have been
doing some research and came across a town that was named Troy and
was once the county seat of Freestone County. It was a stop for
boats on the Trinity River and was east of Fairfield, now the Freestone
County seat. Other than this there is no other information as to
what happened to this town. Nothing of this place exists except
for an old type of rail car that ran people down and across the
river. I have asked other people but they just laugh and smile and
then say, " You'll never find anything about Troy." Was this town
some type of nightmare place or did it just die? ... - Sincerely,

The rail car
and tracks are still intact. I've been out to see them. ... There
is a small (cemetery) on a private piece of land. There are about
4 or 5 stones and you can verify this with the Freestone Co. cemetery
list. ... I have been there 3-4 times and every time I am there
it's as if I know the town is there but can't exactly find it. Thank
you!!! Sincerely, Yvette Bravo Calhoun MS Denton, TX, January 27,
