History in
a Pecan Shell
AKA just plain Arroyo, the site dates from the 1860s when Mexican
shepherds named it for its location on the Arroyo Colorado.
In 1904, Arroyo's school reported 24 students being taught by a single
teacher. The community had a post office open from 1887 through 1907
and three years later there were just ten residents and two businesses.
By the time the Great Depression came around, only a few residences
comprised the community.
Today the population is 510 according to the 2017 Official Texas State
map. |
