History in
a Pecan Shell
The town came into being with the arrival of the St. Louis, Brownsville
and Mexico Railroad in 1904. Driscoll was named after local rancher
and land donor Robert Driscoll, Jr. despite the fact that he had already
been so honored within Nueces
County. To avoid confusion, the former Driscoll was quickly renamed
Alfred.
By 1920 Driscoll had a population of 500 and reached its high-water
mark in 1960 with 669 residents. Ten years later it had declined slightly
but has since grown to the present 739. |
