History in
a Pecan Shell
The name rucia
describes a silver-gray color. The Spanish word is almost always applied
to horses, therefore Las Rucias can be translated as “The Silver-Gray
Horses.” The site was significant in two wars. It was the Lexington
of The Mexican War and during the Civil War (June 25th 1864) there
was a fight between the Union and Confederate forces.
The community sprang up in the 1970s as a colonia – an non-incorporated
community often without water or improved roads. Included in the colonia
was a church, surrounded by fifty two families. The population was
estimated at 341 residents in 1976. |
