History
in a Pecan Shell
Once a part of Spanish land grants, Lasara was platted in 1924. The
name comes from the first names of Laura Harding and Sarah Gill wives
of early settlers. William Harding and Lamar Gill were the husbands
and if not for the women, the town might've been named Willam or Wilharlam.
A school district was signed into effect in 1925 and a post office
opened the following year. The population was an estimated 100 in
1933 and it seems to have peaked in 1950 with 150 Lasarans. The figure
has declined back to the 100 mark in 1990, and swollen to 1024 in
2000. |
