History on a Pinhead

The community was settled in the 1890s on the Old Mason Road. It was granted a post office in 1894 with Sarah E. Jenkins as postmistress. Sarah was evidently an avid reader, for she named the town after a popular novel The Hidden Hand; or, Capitola the Madcap.

Despite the lofty name, the population was a mere 25 residents in 1896 and Sarah Jenkins was no longer postmistress by 1909 – the year the post office closed its doors. The route of the road was altered and the town had neither the manpower nor the inclination to move to the highway. Capitola was left to the elements.
