History in
a Pecan Shell
First known as Fuch’s Mill in the late 1860s. Wilhelm Fuchs
(German for Fox) was the original owner. When a post office was applied
for in 1874 the name Cypress Mill was submitted and it remained Cypress
Mill ever since (the post office closed in the 1980s). The population
reached 130 by the mid-1880s and cotton
was the principal crop supplemented by wool and cattle.
Around the turn of the century, the town peaked with 200 residents
but by 1940 it had decreased to a mere 30 people. By 1970 the community
grew to 76 but again declined to 56 – where it remained for the 2000
census. |
