History in a Pecan Shell

Still listed as a town, it might surprise some people who only know it as an exit off of I-35.

The community, named for a remembered town in Germany, had its own post office as early as 1886. It closed for a few years in the 1890s, reopened only to close for good in 1901.

Dessau had it's own school early in the 20th century - but it merged with Pflugerville in 1920. The population has never broken records. From an estimate of 30 in late 1890s it dropped to only 10 during the first days of the Great Depression.

After WWII it rose to 50 and stayed around that level until the 60s when people stopped keeping track.
