History in
a Pecan Shell
Not exactly a town,
Trio was actually a consolidated school and the residences that surrounded
it. The photos here are of the former school. |

Trio Schoolhouse
The wood frame
Live Oak School was moved to this site in 1907 and in 1915, students
from two other schools (Hackberry
and Prairie View) started attending classes. Rather than have a three-way
fight over a name, a compromise was reached with the charmless utilitarian
name of Trio.
The merger required a new building and so the brick two-story building
was constructed. Grades one through ten were taught in four classrooms
while the former frame school became a teacherage.
The Trio school was merged with the Sabinal ISD in the late 1940s
and the brick school fell into private hands where it was used for
storing hay.
Locals say that the building is haunted - and that on occasion, the
sounds of children playing can be heard on the wind. |
Photographer's
note:
This is the shell of the old Trio school in eastern Uvalde
County near Sabinal. The community
seemed to have revolved around the school. The building has burned,
apparently in the past few years. I suspect, based on satellite images,
that it burned between 1990-96. No cornerstone could be found.....
There is nothing else left of the community. - Stephen
