The Courthouse Magnolias

Despite the name City of Oaks, it’s Magnolias that grace Columbus’ courthouse yard.
The only known anecdote relating to these trees comes from the filming of the 1965 Steve McQueen movie Baby, The Rain Must Fall. The scene called for Steve McQueen to leave town on his motorcycle, but the Magnolias blocked what could’ve been a more dramatic shot. The movie people asked if several of the Magnolias could be removed. The local liaison smiled and said “No.”
