The
Ranger Oaks in Seguin
TE photo |
Across
from the former post office on the SE corner of Gonzales and Travis
Streets.
Under the shade of these trees, the "Gonzales Rangers" camped.
Prior to the formation of the more famous Texas Rangers, these men
patrolled the area between San
Antonio and Gonzales.
Their leader was Captain Matthew Caldwell (namesake of Caldwell
County, Caldwell,
Texas and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence).
Caldwell and other Gonzales Rangers lived here - a convenient half-way
point on their patrol.
Shortly after settling in what was then called Walnut Creek - the
town changed its name to Seguin.
Seguin has
two other famous trees:
- "The Whipping
Oak" and
- "The Beef
Tree".
Both are just a
few blocks away near the Guadalupe
County Courthouse.
