History in
a Pecan Shell
The
town was born as a stop on the Santa Fe when it connected Lubbock
and Plainview. The
name came from M. G. Abernathy, one of the partners in the South Plains
Investment Company - who promoted the town.
Abernathy was initially built with structures from the town of Bartonsite,
seven miles NW. A post office was granted in 1910 and four years later
there was a respectible population of 300 which increased to 1,500
by the mid 20s. With the arrival of the Great Depression the population
dropped to 850 where it remained until after WWII
when a small oil boom boosted it to nearly 2,000. |
