History in a Pecan Shell

Dunn began life as a watering hole. The town's namesake was Alonzo T. Dunn, the landowner of the townsite in 1889. Dunn's house became a mail drop and a year later it was made an official post office with Dunn as postmaster. A school opened that same year, although population figures aren't available for the town's early history.

In 1938 Highway 208 was constructed and well from Dunn's homestead was covered by the new road. Dunn's population was given as 75 for the year 2000.

Dunn

Started as change station for teams hauling goods north after T. & P. Railway reached Colorado City in 1881. Freighters camped here beside creek. A blacksmith shop and store were started to supply them. In time a town developed. Mail was dropped at home of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Dunn. Post office, granted 1890, was given their name; Mr. Dunn was first postmaster. In 1890, the first school was built.

A well, windmill and trough were added for travelers and town. Because it was in middle of the road, well was covered when highway was paved in 1938.
