History in
a Pecan Shell
A
lawyer from nearby Canadian,
Texas named Harvey E. Hoover is the town's namesake. Hoover is
just over the Gray side of the Gray
/ Roberts county
line.
The town was born as a switch on the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway
(1887). The Hoover post office opened in 1910 - closed in 1914 and
reopened a year later, closing for good in 1972.
Oil was discovered in the thirties - but not enough for a full-fledged
boom. Hoover's restricted development is a result of its proximity
to Pampa. In 1980 the population was
a mere thirty-five, which has since declined to the current estimate
of five. The largest landmark in the area is the 1954 grain elevator.
