History in
a Pecan Shell
Comanchero
country through most of the 19th Century, it wasn’t until the mid
to late 1870s when Eugenio Romero became the community’s first resident.
Eugenio was a relative of Casimero Romaro who brought a group of shepherds
from New Mexico to settle the open pastures. Originally called Romero
Springs, the community grew after the Rock Island railroad connected
and created pens for loading cattle.
The place was almost devoid of humans. As late as 1940 the community
reported only 40 people served by a single store. Even into the mid
1980s, there was still no post office and the lone store had closed
its doors.
The population decreased to a mere 25 residents – the same figure
reported for the 1990 census. |
