History in
a Pecan Shell
George Sparenberg,
postmaster at Big
Spring in neighboring Howard
County helped one G. H. Gartin apply for a post office at his
Dawson County store.
The post office was granted in 1903 and operated until 1954 with Gartin
serving as first postmaster.
The community that grew around the store was named in honor of Sparenberg
for his assistance in securing the post office.
The town had a population of 200 in 1920, and according to the Handbook
of Texas, this was the town’s highest reported population. By
1930 there were only 75 residents. The population remained below 100
– dropping down to only 20 in 1980 – where it remained for the 2000
census. |

Sparenberg,
Texas Forum
The correct
spelling is Sparenberg with an 'e' not Sparenburg with a 'u'. The
difference between the two is German vs British spelling (the family
name is German in origin) Thank you. - James Sparenberg, January
25, 2006
This Sparenberg page was suggested for inclusion by Susan Bergstrom,
a direct descendant of the town’s namesake.
