History in
a Pecan Shell
Once included in
the Slaughter Ranch, the property was divided in the mid 1920s
for small farms. A school district was formed in 1928, and the community's
first store opened the following year.
In the late 1930s oil was discovered and Sundown became famous for
it’s 2.5 mile long main street. The town prospered but in 1947 was
struck by a killer tornado.
The 1950 census reported 1,487 residents with a slight decline by
1960 (1,186). By 2000 it was 1,505. |
