History in
a Pecan Shell
Back in 1903 when
the county was freshly
minted – Tahoka was made county seat with no competitors or rivals.
Tahoka became the first town on the lower South Plains (south of Lubbock).
Tahoka had a respectable population of 786 for the 1920 census which
grew to 1,620 ten years later. Tahoka continued to grow even as the
county population declined. It increased to over 2,000 for 1940 and
by 1980 it reached 3,200. But by 1990 it declined slightly, rebounding
a bit to 2,910 for the 2000 Census.
