History
in a Pecan Shell
Named after one
of the early settlers, Whitfield began in the early 1890s.
At one time Whitfield had both Methodist and Baptist churches and
a two-room school named Price which consolidated with the school at
Kress in 1948. The post office closed
in 1919 and the only population figure available was in 1947 when
15 people were living there. The Baptist church moved to Claytonville
in the early 60s and only the Methodist church and a community center
remained by the 1980s. |
