History in
a Pecan Shell
Welcome W. Chandler
is regarded as the area's first settler. The land at that time (early
1850s) was considered to be a part of Brownwood.
Chandler's house served as Brown
County's first post office in 1858. Shortly after the Civil War,
disputes over water and land rights caused people of Brownwood
to relocate, creating two communities.
In 1928 an attorney named Walter U. Early donated land for several
school buildings and the Early ISD was formed. Anderson, Delaware,
Jenkin Spring and Ricker schools were consolidated with the Early
ISD. The Early school had 9 teachers and nearly 300 pupils in 1935.
In the 1940s the town started growing around the school. Early finally
incorporated in 1951, when it had a population of 600. Early had a
population of 1,097 in 1970 and a city hall was finally built in 1982.
Early's post office opened in 1985. |
