History in
a Pecan Shell
Edith had its beginnings
in the 1880s, gaining its official name with the opening of a post
office in 1890. The namesake was a woman from Ballinger
named Edith Bonsall, although the reason for the honor is not currently
available.
The town suffered the fate of many towns whose proximity to the county
seat doomed them from developing their own separate economy. By 1955
the Edith post office closed its doors. A single business stayed open
to serve the estimated 25 residents, but by the 1970s, Edith had been
abandoned, leaving only the cemetery.
