History in
a Pecan Shell
Foard
City was designated a stop on the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad
in 1908. The town had just been granted a post office the previous
year. People relocating from the nearby hamlet of Harrisonville made
up a sizeable portion of the new population. One F. R. Lefevre donated
land for school and cemetery in 1910 and Harrisonville’s tiny school
was placed on the donated plot.
The community closed its schools in 1939 and the post office closed
in the mid 1950s along with the town’s only business. Many Foard Citizens
moved to the more prosperous county seat
– less than 10 miles away, leaving a mere handful of residents. The
population has been estimated at 10 since the 1980 Census. |

Note:
"The only structure in Foard City is this collapsed church. The
unamed, hidden and totally untended cemetery is about 1/2 mile to
the northwest." - Barclay
