History in a Pecan Shell

Settlement began in the mid 1880s with a store / post office. The name Goree was adopted to honor Knox County settler Robert Goree. In 1890 the store was bought and moved with the new site becoming “North Goree.” The railroad arrived in 1906 and a cotton gin was built that same year.

From a population of 614 in1920, Goree had declined to 425 at the end of the Great Depression, increasing to 640 by the 1950 census. The population has been declining in recent years – from 524 in 1980 to 203 by 2010.
