History in
a Pecan Shell
Originally named
Mayflower, the town underwent a name change in 1883.
The town had hoped to be a major railroad crossroads, but the railroads
involved chose Vernon instead.
The hammered-together name Oklaunion was meant to signify a “union
with Oklahoma”.
The high population of 400 in 1928 encouraged the town to incorporate
– an act they dissolved in the 1970s. The population was 223 during
WWII and the
town has been in a slow decline ever since. A picturesque view of
a typical Texas town can be viewed from the overpass of Hwy 287 –
over Hwy 183. |

Subject: The
Chit and Chat Cafe in Oklaunion, Texas
I have a wooden picture of Jesus Christ knocking on a door and it
is stamped on the back 'The Chit and Chat Cafe', Oklaunion, Texas.
It belonged to my grandma and grandpa and hung in their house when
I was a child. I am now in my 60's and I have had it for about 30
years. Any history of the cafe? - Cindy Hanson Pinkney, March 06,
