History in
a Pecan Shell
The community
was established in the early 1880s and was granted a post office
in 1885. It had an uneventful history until the 1920s when it underwent
an oil boom. From a mere 30 people, it exploded to an estimated
5,000 residents – who all left after the boom subsided. The 1980
population was reported to be 40 and that figure was the same for
the 2000 census.

Note:
"Pioneer was a pleasant little surprise. It is on FM374 about
4-1/2 miles SE of Cross
Plains or about 7 miles NW of Rising
Star. I somehow missed the Pioneer Cemetery right on TX 36."
