History
in a Pecan Shell
Located just two miles east of the Stonewall
County line, Sagerton came into being in 1905. The town’s namesake
was local landowner W.M. Sager who donated land for the community.
With a connection on the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad,
Sagerton became a shipping point for beef, chicken and cotton.
A second railroad (the Stamford and Northwestern) arrived in 1909
although it was short-lived.
Two devastating fires (1917 and 1926) ruined Sagerton’s plans for
prosperity. From a population of 300 in 1940, it shrank to 115 by
1980 where it remained for the 2000 census. |

TX Spiser Mercantile photos
"I am attaching a photo of my grandfather, G.H. Spiser, standing
in front of his new Mercantile store in Sagerton, TX. The photo was
taken in 1908. G.H. Spiser would have been 20 years old in 1908. The
Haskell, TX, 1908 Sagerton Phone book lists this as one of the businesses.
The second photo is the inside of the store and I have identified
G.H. Spiser and his sister, Bettie Kieke. The others I cannot identify."

Sagerton Schoolhouse
& Class Photo
I was looking through
some family photos and found this picture that includes my Grandmother,
Olga Henson (married name). Her maiden name was Olga Schibli. She
was born in Dec 1895, and in this picture she looks to be about 10
- 12 years old. This would date the photo around 1905, at what looks
like to be a one-room schoolhouse.
If you greatly
enlarge the photo, there is an imprint in the paper near the top
that seems to read " Isee u. dole" - I can't quite make sense of this.
Hope you enjoy the photo - Gary Henson, San
