History on
a Pinhead
The town came into being as the Godwin Ranch was subdivided
and sold to farmers in the early 1900s. A store was opened in 1907
and the proprietor (B. W. Moore) had to wait for a population. By
1915 there were only ten people living in Stith. The second set of
figures available covers the years 1940-1990 when the population was
entered as 18 residents. Thanks to its proximity to Abilene
Stith has enjoyed a boom in recent years. There were 50 reported residents
for the 2000 census. |

Stith is just northeast of Merkel Texas
and my Daddy is buried in the Cemetery there. Before we moved to Noodle,
my dad farmed there for many years near the Kelso Farm. I was the
baby of the family with five older brothers. We lived near the gas
plant in Stith at the time of my birth. I think the old cotton gin
is still standing today. I know that my mother still has some family
photos of us in the early 1950s when we lived in the flat there and
our cotton farm photos. My mother’s name is Vera Maxine Stevens Nichols
Black and she is 83 years young. - Melissa Nichols Beasley, Wichita
