It was an Englishman who named this place in 1882 after the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. A post office opened in 1894.

From a population of only 20 people in 1910, the arrival of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway meant growth – but nothing spectacular. The boll weevil and reduced cotton prices stopped growth in its tracks. It managed to hit 50 just prior to WWII but by 1990 it was back to a mere 35 residents.
