The
incident happened sometime in 1954 when we lived just south of DeKalb,
Texas about ten miles.
Back then we didn't have nylon fishing line.
It was all cotton. When you got your line wet, it had to be air dried before putting
it away. If you didn't, it would rot in just a few days.
My brother, cousin
and I had been on the river for a couple of days fishing. When we got home, I
stretched our trot-lines out on mother's clothes-line to dry. Later in the day
my Mother went into to the back yard to hang clothes and when she went under the
clothesline, one of the hooks on the fishing line caught her in the lobe of her
ear.
I heard her cry-out and when I went out into the yard I saw mother
standing under the clothes line. She was crying a little as she told me what had
happened. I thought it was rather funny and NO, I didn't laugh so she could see
me.
I went to the shop and got a pair of wire cutters. I came back and
cut the hook out of her ear lobe. After she was loose, She told me to NEVER hang
another fishing line on the clothes line. Know what? I never did.
We would
laugh about it years later. She said it didn't really hurt, it just scared her.
She didn't complain too much because she liked the fish we brought in. My Dear
Mother has been gone since 1993, We still miss her.
