History
in a Pecan Shell
Originally called Gorbit, Irving had a post office under that
name from 1889 to 1894.
In 1894 they moved the post office in anticipation of a proposed railroad
and the name was changed to Kit – for
reasons lost to history. The railroad line arrived, but not where
they were expecting it.
A timeline
of significant events in Irving’s history:
1894: Under
the name of Kit, the town had two gins,
a blacksmith shop, general store and churches.
1902: Julius Schulze and Otis Brown promote another location
closer to the railroad and donate land for a depot. According to legend,
Mrs. Brown was given the honor of naming the town. She named it after
the author Washington Irving.
1904: The former Kit post office
moves to Irving
1909: the Kit and Lively schools
became the core units of the Irving district schools.
1912: The town had a population of 500
1914: Irving was incorporated
1925: the population was 357
1950: the population was 2,575

Irving, Texas
As I understand it, part of Irving's growth came from swallowing
up others.
I'm attaching some photos of the cemetery
for Kit. The markers provide
information.
Annexing: for example, Shady Grove
is a name of a major street in South Irving now but there was a
city.
I don't think you'll find Shady
Grove on any maps...I can't find the site, but as I recall Irving
agreed to provide police and fire services that Grand
Prairie would not, so Shady
Grove decided to become part of Irving.
Union Bower, TX was another
city but now it's a road in Irving
Sowers, TX is another. My GPS actually
indicated I was in Sowers so perhaps
it survives as some legal entity. I'm attaching some photos of the
Sowers Cemetery. "Story" is a major
road here and sure enough, there are people with that name in the
cemetery.
Thanks for the website!
