History in a Pecan Shell

The town’s history can be pinpointed to a specific date. Lots were first sold on the 22nd of July in 1880 with a post office and school opening the following year.

From a mere 50 people in 1881, Leonard increased to 350 by 1885 and ended the decade with 400 residents.

The town acquired a newspaper in 1890 and Leonard settled in – content with being an agrarian community – producing mainly cotton – with side crops of wheat and corn.

The population has remained stable for decades – at around 1,000 people. It broke 1,500 for the 1980 census and for 2000 it was reported as 1,846.
