History in a Pecan Shell

Founded by Dr. John Edge in the 1870s, it appeared alongside the Old San Antonio Road. It acquired a post office in the mid 1890s which remained open into the 1930s.

Dr. Edge had two brothers and the three were partners in the community’s first store. In the mid to late 1890s, Edge prospered with eleven businesses. The first population figure was 25 residents in 1900.

J. M. Lawless opened a cotton gin in 1906 and the population had reached 50 by 1910.

A high school opened in 1912 but the building burned in 1940. Later, the local schools merged with those in nearby Kurten.

The population broke the 100 mark in 1933 and the community has been so comfortable at the number, they have continued to use it through the 2000 census.

  • Subject: Edge, TX
I’ve attached a couple of pictures I took in Edge. Our house was built in the 1977. It was a massive thing out in the country on way more acres than any one family would need. It’s been split apart now and there are driveways along my old footpaths to fishin’ holes. It’s so surreal to go back there. I literally just parked in the middle of the road because there’s still not that much traffic out there. - Allison Garton, May 24, 2015

I am LOVING your website!! I grew up in the tiny community of Edge, but it’s not listed on your site. The general store has reopened and the population has boomed since I moved away in 1988. - Allison Garton, October 22, 2014
